walking

I took the kids on a walk tonight through the neighborhood.  Timber was in the little umbrella stroller and Flora and Scout were walking.  They are good walkers.  They stay near me and are very good about holding onto the stroller handles when a car passes by.  I like walking with them.  *smiley face*

We walked past a house that had Apple-Bottom Jeans blaring from the garage.  (If you don't know the song, just imagine a pop-ish/rap-ish/club-ish song.)  When Flora heard the music she totally started breaking it down right there on the sidewalk!  She was movin' and groovin' her little bum and waving her hands around!  It was really pretty hilarious!  And she acted like she wasn't doing anything unusual.  I don't even know where she learned those moves!

I don't know how many cars and trucks we passed on our walk but Scout didn't comment on any of them.....until we walked past an old maroon Buick LeSabre with peeling paint.  "Oh, wow, Mommy," Scout said, "that's a cool car."  "I like that car, Mommy.  That car is very, very cool."  Puzzled, I asked him why that car was so cool.  "Because," he said, "it has a K on the back."  Ah yes, a K can even make a Buick cool in Scout's eyes.

have you had your junior frosty today?

Flora:  Does ice cream come from milk?
Me:  Yep!  It does.
Flora:  Pink ice cream comes from pink milk and chocolate ice cream comes from chocolate milk.
Scout:  Yellow ice cream comes from lemonade and blue ice cream comes from......sky???
Flora:  No, Scout, ice cream doesn't come from sky.  Every different color cow makes different color milk so blue ice cream comes from blue milk from a blue cow.

Can't argue with the logic of either one!  And they say all the really deep conversations take place over coffee.  Pshaw!

i'm sad.....but i've still got funny stories

I'm feeling melancholy tonight because I just watched the series finale of a great show on Netflix.  I'm not going to tell you which show.....it's embarrassing......but it was SO GOOD!  Some of you might think you know what show I'm talking about but, trust me, you don't.  No one knows I watch this show.  Except Chris.....but he's not telling.

But you know how it is when a favorite show ends.  I feel like I have walked through so much with these people.....I've watched them grow up......they've entertained me through MANY of the nights that Chris doesn't get home until after 10pm.....and so I'm a little bit sad.  I know it's pathetic -- seriously, I KNOW it is -- but there ya go.  I'm pathetic.  And a little bit sad.

So now we're all sad.  But good news!!!  I have a funny story to cheer us all up!!  A few days ago, Scout was pretending to be "Mommy" to his squirrel.  It's pointless to suggest he be the "Daddy" instead -- if he wants to be the Mommy he's going to be the Mommy.  Whatever.  So anyway, he comes into the kitchen and tells me that he is the squirrel's Mommy and he is going to feed it now.  I had a pretty good idea of how he is going to "feed" his squirrel and, sure enough, when I walked into the living room he was sitting on the couch holding his squirrel in a classic breastfeeding position.  Smirking, I walked back into the kitchen and told Chris to go look at his son.  Chris walks into the living room, sees what Scout is doing, and nonchalantly says, "Scout, you have to lift your shirt up for the squirrel to be able to eat" and walks back into the kitchen.  Ah, I thought I was going to get him good but he totally turned it around on me!

And one more story that I just remembered.....
Flora likes to rhyme things these days.  She's always coming up with things that rhyme and every time it's like she's discovered gold.  She's pretty good at rhyming now but every once in a while she gets stumped.  Today she decided to make a rhyme with Timber's name.  She walked around the house muttering to herself, "Timber shower?  Timber tree?  Timber water?  Water Timber?"  She went on and on but I couldn't hear most of what she was saying.  It was funny to hear the things she was trying to rhyme with Timber!  Eventually she had to ask for help and we decided that Timber could rhyme with 'member (as in remember).  'Member Timber?  :-)

scavenger hunt

Flora and Scout went on a scavenger hunt!  This was a really fun activity for them that was really easy to plan.  Actually, the "planning" was kind of fun too -- it was basically just me drawing pictures on a piece of cardboard.

So this was their scavenger hunt list (don't judge my artwork!).  I put a big laundry basket in the living room and as they found the items on the list they put it in the laundry basket.  They only had one list so teamwork was a requirement of this game.

As I suspected, Flora took control of the list and the marker.  She sent Scout on assignments and he would bring items to the basket and she would check it off the list.  Occasionally there were items that she wanted to get herself though.  Mostly the girly things or the things she considered to be "grown up" things.

Once they checked off everything on their scavenger hunt list we went through the basket to look at the things they found.  It was fun!  A good rainy or snowy day activity for sure.  We don't have any of these new Crayola Dry Erase Crayons and boards but I think those would be great for this game because then we could make scavenger hunt list after scavenger hunt list without using every piece of cardboard I own (I don't own a ton of cardboard).
Anyway, this was just a fun little activity that I wanted to share.  It was inspired by an episode of Blue's Clues, Flora's new favorite show.  She's so funny -- she'll yell the answers at the tv and talk to Steve and Joe like they are really her friends.  She even wrote a letter to Steve and put it in an envelope to mail to him.  Hm....I guess it's about time I wrote her a return letter from "Steve" and put it in the mailbox for her to find....she'll be asking soon if he's written back yet!

good things

Yesterday afternoon was baaaaaaaad.  Flora was a sweetheart but Scout and Timber were just awful.  Granted, Timber is teething and Scout skipped his nap so they both had reasons for being so grumpy but that doesn't make it any more pleasant.  So that was bad.  Now here are some good things I'm choosing to focus on instead:

1.  Scout is potty trained!  Yay!  He is staying dry all night too although I still put him in pull-ups at night because it seems weird to put Flora in a pull-up and not Scout (she still has nighttime accidents about once a week).  Scout was so easy.  I've always heard boys are harder to potty train than girls but I feel like I didn't do any work at all with Scout.  One day he decided he was going to go in the potty and that was that.  Two down, one to go!  That's exciting!

2.  Our backyard is so shady!  I love it that the kids can play outside without being in the direct sunlight.  The deck is sunny and there are a couple of sunny patches in the yard but for the most part it is shady all day.  I never realized how awesome it was until I had kids.

3.  Timber is walking!  He still falls a lot but he's working so hard at it.  Occasionally he can make it all the way across the room without falling.  And it's obviously how proud he is of himself!  He's also eating pretty much everything now.  He loves food and I love that he's not a picky eater.

4.  Flora has little friends!  There are two sweet little girls across the street who always ask if Flora can come out and play.  That's so funny to me!  I didn't think I would be hearing that this early.  The girls are 11-yrs-old and 6-years-old so Flora is like a little doll to them.  They are very good with her and Flora absolutely loves the attention.  Last night she was SO excited to "go play with my friends" and she told me that after I walked her across the street she didn't need me there anymore.  "You just go back home, Mommy, while I stay and play with my friends."  Wow--didn't think I would be hearing THAT this early either!  So Timber and I sit on the front porch and watch her play across the street.  It's just so darn cute.

5.  It's almost Friday!  Friday is my new favorite day of the week because of my totally super awesome husband.  Friday mornings are officially my morning off.  I can do whatever I want until 1pm!!  And the best part is that I don't have to cram everything I want to do into one Friday morning because I know I will have free time every Friday.  Last week I slept in late and then went shopping while Chris took all three kids out for bagels at Einstein Bros and to Cabelas.  I'm still trying to decide what I will do tomorrow.  Ah.....knowing that I can sleep in late on Friday is what gets me out of bed some mornings!

you had to be there

"Now pull your pants up and walk across the troll bridge."

I actually said that with a straight face.  And it made sense.  And Flora did it.

*giggle*yawn*

Some funny things that Flora has said:

  • Flora decided to play store by selling her toys to Chris and me.  She showed Chris one of her dolls and asked if he would like to buy it.  He said he would and she said, "Great, that will be £2."  Pounds?  Huh?  Still not sure why she thinks we use pounds instead of dollars.
  • While pretending to fish, Flora thought she "caught one."  She pulled up her imaginary line and looked at her imaginary hook, then declared, "Oh man, it's just an old ladybug."
  • According to Flora, everything that happened in the past happened either "last year" or "when I was 2-years-old."  So if she's talking about what we ate for breakfast yesterday she would say, "Last year we ate strawberries for breakfast" or "We had strawberries for breakfast when I was 2-years-old."
Oh my goodness . . . we are watching a show while I'm writing this and a character just let out a big yawn.  Suddenly I'm very very sleepy.  Oh, and now Timber just yawned!  It might be a long three hours until naptime.  Not that I will be napping today -- I have things to do -- but maybe if I work quickly I can sneak in a 10- or 15-minute nap.  Everyone's gotta have goals, right?!
